It takes a lot of resources to build one of these. By the time you put the cockpit onto it and the bits you need for power, does it give you much of an advantage over the smaller vehicles in the game?

Yes, the large rover is the ultimate vehicle in this game. It can be used to create some incredibly useful machines that can dig tunnels into the planet and many other things if you are creative enough to make use of the fact that you have a large platform that you can move around.
