How to Find Your Way Home When Lost

Find Your Way Home When Lost

Navigating around planets in Astroneer can sometimes be tricky, especially when you get separated from your base. Fortunately, there are several strategies you can use to relocate your base and find your way back home even if you are thoroughly lost. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you out:

Step 1: Check Your Compass

Your compass is your primary navigation tool in Astroneer. It shows the location of your base (among other things,) regardless of where you are on the planet.

  • To open the compass, hover over your Astroneer’s avatar.
  • Find the icon that represents your base (the large, circular home icon) and follow that direction.

Step 2: Look for the Beacons

  • Each base you build automatically generates a beacon, which shoots a colored pillar of light up to the sky. This beacon is visible from anywhere on the same planet.
  • The color of the beacon light depends on the color of the vehicle bay at the base. All beacons default to blue.
  • If you can see a beacon, head towards it. This will always direct you back toward a base.

Step 3: Follow the Tethers

  • If you’ve set up a network of tethers leading out from your base, you can follow these back to your starting point. Tethers provide oxygen and are often the safest paths.
  • One drawback to using tethers for navigation is that they rely on line-of-sight โ€“ if your tether line goes over a hill or through a valley, you may not be able to see the subsequent tethers.

Step 4: Use the Stars

  • The stars and planets can help you find your way back. Look for a large band of bright stars in the sky, this is the planetโ€™s equator.
  • Most starting bases are near the equator. Therefore, by following the equator, you should eventually come across your home base.
  • Keep in mind that this is not the quickest method but it’s a surefire way to find your home if all else fails.

Step 5: Use a Vehicle

  • If you have a vehicle, use it. Vehicles can cover a lot of ground quickly, and many of them can move over obstacles that you’d have to navigate around on foot.
  • Some vehicles have options for installing beacons or other directional tools, which can make it easier to find your way back home.

Step 6: Die and Respawn [Not Recommended]

  • In an absolute worst-case scenario, you could allow your Astroneer to die in order for them to respawn back at the last Habitat Module or Shelter you were located at. This doesn’t come recommended as a usual course of action as you will leave all your items behind.

Keep these steps in mind the next time you embark on an adventure in Astroneer. With the right tools and strategies, you’ll never truly be lost!
