What does the RTG do?

Since this is grouped with power generation items, I am guessing this makes power too. It costs a lot to research and since it doesn’t say in the computer what the RTG does, I don’t want to waste my time for something that I won’t make any use of. What does the RTG do and is it worth unlocking?

The RTG is the best structure in Astroneer for generating power. It is like having a mini nuclear reactor. It will generate unlimited power and does not require you to keep topping it up with some kind of fuel. It comes with a high cost of construction but once you have it, it will be something you can make use of for every power generation need that you may have.
