I have been searching the islands around the lake and I’ve found a chest covered with red goo. How do you unlock these chests. Do I need an ability that I haven’t found yet?

Progress further through the story and you will obtain the magic arrow that you need to destroy shock crystals. This will give you access to these chests and many other puzzles.
