The Closed Door Quest Guide

The Closed Door Quest Guide

The Closed Door is the opening quest that you will pick up as soon as you get started in Tears of the Kingdom. This quest will get you used to most of the important game mechanics and any new things that have been introduced with this title.

If your Zelda skills have gotten a little rusty over the years, you may find it a little tricky to get back up to speed with this quest. There are also a few things that can be a bit tricky to figure out on your own that the game doesn’t spell out for you. Below you will find a detailed guide for the Closed Door quest in Tears of the Kingdom that should help you get through this quest if you get stuck.

Ukouh Shrine – The First Shrine

The Ukouh Shrine is the first shrine you will visit. This one will get you familiar with the Ultrahand ability. Using it to glue things together and move items around. This shrine is relatively easy and you should quickly grasp what needs to be done.

The main mechanic you will be introduced to is using a hook to slide down the rail. You will need to attach the hook to the plank of wood and then move the assembled platform onto the rail. The platform will begin to slide down the rail on the hook so hop onto this if you want to make it to the other side.

This mechanic is important to remember as it is going to be something that you will be making use of several times during The Closed Door quest in Tears of the Kingdom.

Making Your Way To In-Isa Shrine

When I played this first, I went back to the temple of time after completing the Ukouh shrine. Since this was not the correct thing to do, the door didn’t unlock. Upon turning around, I saw the Gutanbac Shrine atop the snowy mountain and made my way toward this, incorrectly. The correct shrine is In-Isa Shrone. You can see the location of this shrine in the image below to make sure you are on the correct path.

building a raft

You will need to make use of your newly acquired ultra-hand ability and repeat the same steps used in the previous shrine to stick hooks to various types of platforms to build a platform to travel along the rail. There’s lots of this along the way and you will need to solve several puzzles like this as you make your way across this part of the sky island.

hook to slide

The first obstacle you will hit is going to be when you hit a body of water too large to swim across. This is where you will need to make use of your first Zonai item, the fan. The logic behind the construction of these things is very easy to grasp and makes a lot of sense, so you should nearly know what to do before you are even told.

The idea is to take something like a tree log, which floats in the water. One on its own will rotate so stick two large tree logs together. Find a fan and stick this to the back side of the two logs. Jump on your newly created raft and strike the fan with your sword and it will take you across the body of water to the other side.

Gutanbas Shrine On The Snowy Mountain

This is the first area that is going to test your memory of the recipe crafting system to create some warm foods that will give you cold resistance. When you get to a certain height on the mountain, you will find that you are no longer able to stay warm, mainly because Link is half-naked at this point in the game. Here is what you need to do.

How To Stop The Cold Killing You

If you spend too long in the cold, it will eventually kill Link. Since obtaining armor to handle this is not possible just yet, you are going to need to make do with what you can find in the area. There are a couple of ways to get cold resistance in Tears of the Kingdom. You will need to create a recipe that provides you with heat resistance.

The quickest way to do this is to take a spicy pepper, which can be found growing all over the foot of the mountain, and cook it with anything. Be it a fish, mushroom, or meat. The more ingredients you use, the longer the cold resistance effect will last. It shouldn’t take you long to reach the shrine at the top of the mountain so you shouldn’t struggle too much with supplies here.

Return To The Temple Of Time

Once you leave the shrine, head over the large white wooden log hanging over the ledge next to the huge tree. Use the Ascend ability to get up through the area above. There will be a chest inside the tree that will contain a chest that has a pair of pants that will give you some cold resistance. Shame they didn’t give you this earlier but at least you have cold resistance now without needing to cook stuff.

The next section is where things are going to get a bit tricky using the gliders to get down to the bottom of the mountain!

how to fly zonai wing

Using The Zonai Wings

This part is a lot more difficult than it should be. The fact there is a wing near the edge of the cliff on the rails, makes it look like you need to do something to activate these wings in order to fly them down to the bottom of the mountain. This is not the case. These are inactive gliders that do not need to be powered up. I have created a more detailed guide explaining how to use the Zonai Wings as it took me ages to figure it out. The video guide below should cover most of it.

The Temple Of Time

Now that you are inside the temple of time, you will need to use a combination of all of your new abilities to make it to the end. The majority of the puzzles here will require you to use the recall ability to make all the rotating gears and platforms go backwards, allowing you to climb over them all. There shouldn’t be anything in here that causes you any major difficulty. Until you need enough health bars to open the large door.

Just like pulling the Master Sword from the stone in Breath of the Wild, you need to have enough health to be able to open this door but right now, you do not have it. You will be told that a fourth shrine has been detected nearby, so you will need to go and complete this first.

fourth shrine

Finding The Fourth Shrine

The location of the fourth shrine is not given to you, so you are going to need to do some looking around in order to find it. It is quite easy to find though. You may have noticed a large array of gears and platforms moving that have no use. This is the path to the fourth shrine.

You will need to use the ascend ability to get up on top of the platform which gives you the height needed to jump onto the platform that is moving. Just as you have done at the start of the temple of time, you will need to use the recall ability to make the gears move backward so you can jump across and get to the other side. Follow the cave and you will find the fourth shrine. Complete this and you will be able to go back to the goddess statue to pray which will grant you a heart container. Now you have enough health to unlock the door.

And that’s a wrap! You should have all of the abilities you need and the main story from this sky island has been completed. Once The Closed Door is finished, you will be able to dive down to Hyrule below and get your hands on the paraglider that has been quite difficult to survive without during your time spent on this quest.
