I have found all of the large research rocks that are in walking distance of my base. I am at the point now where I am having to walk really long distances in order to get the rocks and then I have to deal with the long walk back. Is there a better way to do this?

You are probably going to be in a catch 22 with this answer. You will need to unlock the tractor and trailer for this. These require bytes to unlock which you are having issues with. Once you have a tractor, you can attach 3 trailers. One trailer can store a research rock. You can carry 3 rocks at a time. Since the tractor is a bit faster than walking and has an oxygen supply, you will be able to travel much further and come back with 3 research rocks at a time.
