I am at the gateway engine on Sylva and I have inserted the resource into the platform but nothing has happened. The resource is sitting there doing nothing. I have double-checked and I am definitely using the correct resource.

You might be putting the resource into the wrong side of the engine room. Check out this guide for activating the gateway engine. There are two sides to the gateway engine room. One side has three platforms for accepting the resource and the other side is for the odd stone. Chances are you have inserted the resource into the odd stone platform.
