If you are setting up a new account on PSN, Xbox Live or any other online gaming network, you might fall into the rotation of thinking of a great name, check it, and find that it has been taken already. This guide will give you some tips on how to create a unique Gamertag that will help you get the name you want.
Before you get started, you will need to accept that if you want a name like “ChuckNorris” you can forget about it. Someone always has the good names taken, especially considering how mature Xbox Live and PSN are now. All the good ones are going to be used. This guide is about showing you how to use those names anyway, by making some small changes.
Finding the Perfect Unique Gamertag
So this is the first hurdle that you are going to need to get over. You need to find the perfect idea. There are lots of places you can go for inspiration. I would suggest you check out the Gamertag generation tool here. This tool will give you a huge amount of random and unique Gamertag ideas that work with a range of different topics and genres.
If you want to go with something a little ruder, you can also use this funny Gamertag generator. It works the same as the other generator above, the only difference is it will suggest some really rude ideas that you will most definitely need to tame down a bit to get past most profanity filters.
Use Special Characters
Special characters are your best friend and should be the first port of call. Replace an “i” with an “!”. It reads the same and may allow you to get the exact Gamertag that you wanted in the first place without any of the trouble.
When it comes to rude words, this is absolutely essential. You cant use a word like “shit”. You may be able to get away with using “$#!t” if the profanity filter is not that advanced. Have a look at all of the different characters on your keyboard to see what ones look most like actual letters. You can start switching them then.
Add Personal Details
Adding numbers might ruin a name a bit. Adding your date of birth to a name will make it unique in most cases, but it isn’t the only way to make a Gamertag more personal to you.
What city do you live in? What is your family name? Lots of random pieces of data can be used. “TexasChuckNorris” for example…is probably one that is taken, but you get the idea of where I am going with this. It is easy to make the name more unique
Use Word Play For A Unique Gamertag
This doesn’t mean some sort of rhyme that makes no sense like “MuckSnorris” as a lot of people might miss this. Puns are always a good way to go but are difficult to come up with for sure. What about something like “ShmuckNorris”. It rhymes, it’s funny, and anyone who knows the name Chuck Norris will definitely get the direction you were going with it but you are making a play on the word a bit.
