How To Enable Suspend & Resume For Games On Xbox One

One of the best features to come with this generation of game consoles is the ability to suspend and resume games. This means you can be in the middle of a game and turn your console off. Next time you load it up, you can play the game instantly, exactly where you left off. No load screens, no game saves.

It is a feature that is incredibly popular, but also not a feature that is enabled by default for everyone. Depending on your power settings, when your Xbox One turns off, it might completely turn off and consume no power. Suspend and resume does not work in this scenario. This guide will show you how to enable it.

Suspending Xbox Games When You Power Down

The Xbox menu for the One does change a bit now and then. Microsoft are known to move the settings pages around. I will keep this guide updated if it ever happens again. The first thing to make this work is you will need to go to the settings menu and modify the power settings. The video below will show you the settings you need to modify.

Navigate to Settings->General->Power Mode & Startup Settings

From this menu, you will need to make sure that the power mode option is set to “Instant On”. The Xbox won’t use that much more power in this mode, but it will consume a little to keep the internet connection active. You can always disable it after you are finished if you just need this to download games overnight or while you are away from the TV.

How To Suspend Xbox One Games

When you are in-game on the Xbox One and you hold the Xbox button on the controller, you will see a power menu appear. Turn off the console and the game will automatically go into suspend mode. Next time you turn the console back on, you will be able to pick up from where you left off.

Can you suspend multiple games at once?

No, it is not possible to suspend multiple games at once and is unlikely to happen for the Xbox One. When you load up another game, any other games that are currently open and running will be closed and the new game will load in its place. Since it is impossible to have two games loaded at the same time when the console is turned on, it is also impossible to suspend two games when the system is powered off.
