Tips for Freeing Up Memory on Your PlayStation 5

    PS5 free up memory

The PlayStation 5 has revolutionized gaming with its lightning-fast built-in SSD storage, allowing for quicker load times and a more immersive gaming experience. However, with great power comes great responsibility – and in this case, that means managing the limited storage space on your console. As you save games, screenshots, and other content, your SSD can fill up quickly, preventing you from installing new games or downloading updates. In this article, we’ll provide some helpful tips on how to free up memory on your PlayStation 5, ensuring that you can continue enjoying your favorite titles without any storage-related hiccups.

The steps below will be useful for anyone who is struggling with the CE-100028-1 error which tells you that there is not enough free space on the SSD to install any more games.

    Check Your Storage Usage

Before you start deleting content, it’s essential to know where your storage space is being used. To do this, navigate to Settings -> Storage -> Console Storage. Here, you’ll see a graph that breaks down how much memory is being consumed by different aspects of the system, such as videos, images, games, and save files. This information can help you identify areas where you can free up memory.

    Delete Unnecessary Game Data

Over time, you may accumulate game data for titles that you no longer play or have completed. Deleting this data can free up a significant amount of storage space. To do this, navigate to Settings -> Storage -> Games and Apps. Here, you can select the games you no longer need and delete them to free up space.

    Manage Your Screenshots and Videos

Screenshots and videos can take up a surprising amount of storage space. To manage these files, go to Settings -> Storage -> Media Gallery. From here, you can delete unnecessary screenshots and videos or transfer them to an external storage device.

    Stream Games with PlayStation Plus

If you have a PlayStation Plus subscription and a stable internet connection, you can stream games directly from the cloud without consuming space on your SSD. This can be a great way to enjoy your favorite titles without worrying about storage limitations.

Use External Storage for PS4 Games

While the PlayStation 5 does not currently support storing PS5 games on external drives, you can still store and play PS4 games from an external HDD or SSD. This can help free up valuable space on your console’s built-in SSD for PS5 games and other content.

Keep Your Save Files in the Cloud

If you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber, you can store your save files in the cloud instead of on your console. This not only frees up storage space but also ensures that your save files are safe and accessible from any PlayStation console.

Regularly Check for Updates and Patches

Developers often release updates and patches for their games, which can sometimes reduce the overall file size of the game. Regularly checking for updates and installing them can help you save storage space over time.

By following these tips, you can effectively manage your PlayStation 5’s storage space and continue enjoying your favorite games without worrying about running out of room. With a little bit of organization and maintenance, you can make the most of your console’s SSD and keep your gaming experience running smoothly.

    1. 1) When deleting whole games OR game save files, make sure you check your settings then storage.
Often times, a game will leave behind DLC/Add-ons that can be miniscule or take up up to 3+ MB each… and that can add up, if you constantly keep a lot of games installed.

      2) Switch your Screenshot Compatibility from .PNG to .JPEG can save space.

      3) Remember, just like the PS4, the PS5 can handle up to 8TB total. The secondary, internal SSD you can install can maximize at 8TB, and on-top of that, you can get an EXTERNAL HDD or SSD of another 8TB.

      4) I think it’s on my default, but turning off VIDEO capture, whenever you earn a trophy, can help save on SSD storage.
