Returning To RPGs

Returning To RPGs

Ah, the life of a gamer. One minute, you’re slaying dragons, saving the world, and feeling like a total boss in your favorite RPG. The next, life takes over, and before you know it, you’ve moved on to other games, other hobbies, and other pursuits.

But then, something calls you back. Maybe it’s the siren song of a particularly epic side quest. Maybe it’s the promise of a new piece of DLC. Maybe it’s just the nagging feeling that you haven’t quite finished what you started.

Whatever the reason, you find yourself returning to that RPG you left behind, ready to jump back into the fray. And that’s when you realize… you have no idea what you’re doing.

It’s a familiar feeling, one that many gamers have experienced. Returning to an RPG after spending time away can be a daunting prospect. After all, these are often complex games, with intricate systems and sprawling worlds to explore. And when you’ve spent time playing other games, it can be a real challenge to get back into the swing of things.

Picking up where you left off from a story perspective alone. It is almost as if you are letting the main character down. They are putting their life on the line and you forget how to open your inventory.

Being an adult with a busy life or a gamer who has far too many games to play and not enough time will quickly have you falling off the cliff of proficiency in an RPG. Where was I going before I stopped? Why didn’t I sell this junk armor, did I need to keep it for something? Even remembering how to fight in combat. Sure, the game will tell you the buttons but there are lots of combat mechanics that play together depending on your class. Remembering it all is overwhelming to the point where you might just start the game again.

With all of the quality of life improvements that video games have gotten over the years, some sort of “you haven’t played in a while, would you like a recap” feature would be an absolute game changer for RPGs.
