Catch ‘Em All… Online? Why a Pokémon MMO Could Be the Evolution We Need

Pokemon MMO future

If you’re anything like me—a lifelong Pokémon trainer with more digital badges than real friends—you’ve probably found yourself wondering: “Why isn’t there a Pokémon MMO yet?” Let’s face it, we’ve spent years reviving the same Pikachu into yet another iteration of Kanto, Johto, and approximately a dozen “-to” regions since. You pour your heart and soul into catching ’em all, get to the top, and then… what? Sip MooMoo Milk in the Pokémon Center while waiting for the next game release? It’s high time we talk about a Pokémon MMO.

Now, I’m aware “Pokémon MMO” is basically the gaming unicorn that fans have prayed for since the first Poké Ball was thrown in 1996. But really, why hasn’t Game Freak gone down this particular Route 66 to MMO Town? We’re in an era where tons of publishers are throwing live service games at us, only to have us dodge them like an oncoming Hyper Beam. Most of them are as essential as an Everstone on a Magikarp. Insufficient, pointless, and let’s face it—tragic.

On the other hand, the Pokémon franchise seems custom-made for something grander than what we’ve been getting. Imagine an evolving Pokémon world thrown into the blender of live service gaming. Events, team battles, dynamic weather conditions affecting spawns—metaphorical Tall Grass to wilderness designers everywhere! Team up with trainers around the globe, trade strategies, and—gasp—actually participate in meaningful battles that don’t involve the ol’ bait-and-switch with a high-level Charizard!

One of the biggest gripes I have with current Pokémon installments is the cyclical “start from scratch” mechanism. Get to the League Champion, admire your Hall of Fame team, and then you’re back to square one when the next game drops. Wouldn’t it be fantastic to have a persistent world where your accomplishments, your Pokémon, and your poorly executed Trainer Card selfies actually matter? Picture taking down legendary Pokémon in epic raid-style battles. Or joining competitive endgame content that’s not limited to battling ten-year-olds who haven’t yet learned what “type advantage” means.

The subscription service for Nintendo Online would suddenly become worth every penny. Instead of being just another fee to play Mario Kart online against some kid from Iowa who always seems to win, we’d be investing in a vibrant, evolving world. For once, my subscription wouldn’t feel like just another Mustard Seed of regret on my bank statement.

But, as much as I would love to rip open an MMO Pokéball and see what wild possibilities pop out, I do have my reservations. And let’s be frank: the biggest one is Game Freak’s current skill set—or lack thereof. Sure, they’ve had hits—hits like a rare Pokémon crit—I acknowledge that. However, in recent years, their games have struggled to innovate and perform even on Nintendo’s own consoles. Which, considering those are specifically developed for their games, is like failing to make pizza in a pizza oven. Ouch.

No offense to the Bandana Dee community, but it’s almost as if Game Freak has become the Waddle Dees of game developers—around since forever, but not really contributing anything groundbreaking these days. For crying out loud, Nintendo, can you wrestle a bit more control over this mess?

So, to my fellow Pokémaniacs out there: let’s continue dreaming about a Pokémon MMO that does the franchise justice. Just imagine logging in after work and setting off on new adventures without having to think about resetting your entire Pokédex for the 23rd time. It’s a dream worth dreaming and one, I think, that’s not too far-fetched.

Who knows? Maybe while writing this, I’ve just inspired a Game Freak employee to pick it up and run with it. Stranger things have happened—remember Detective Pikachu?
