The PS5 can work with many TVs through HDMI-CEC, known on PlayStation 5 as HDMI Device Link. When supported by the TV, this can make the console and display behave more like one connected system. In some setups, turning on the TV or selecting the PS5 input can wake the console automatically.

How the Feature Works
HDMI-CEC sends control commands through the HDMI cable. Sony calls the PS5 version HDMI Device Link, while TV brands use names such as Bravia Sync, Anynet+, Simplink, EasyLink, VIERA Link, or HDMI Control. The names differ, but the goal is the same: power and input control between connected devices.
Enable HDMI Device Link on PS5
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Select System.
- Go to HDMI.
- Turn on Enable HDMI Device Link.
- Enable any available one-touch power options shown in the same menu.
The exact options shown can vary by system software version, but HDMI Device Link is the key setting.
Enable HDMI-CEC on the TV
Open your TV settings and look for the HDMI-CEC option. It is often found under external device management, inputs, system settings, or general settings. Turn it on, then restart both the TV and PS5. Some TVs also have separate options for auto power sync, device auto power, or input switching.
Test the Setup
Put the PS5 into rest mode, turn the TV off, then turn the TV back on and select the PS5 HDMI input. If your TV and console support the behaviour, the PS5 should wake. If it does not, try turning the PS5 on from the controller and confirm that the TV switches to the correct input, which proves that at least part of HDMI-CEC is working.
If It Does Not Work
Connect the PS5 directly to the TV while testing. Soundbars, receivers, HDMI switches, splitters, and capture cards can interfere with CEC commands. Also try a different HDMI port, because some TVs only support full CEC behaviour on specific inputs.
Other devices can cause conflicts. Streaming boxes, set-top boxes, and other consoles may send their own CEC commands and take priority. If the wrong device wakes or the TV changes to the wrong input, disable CEC on devices that do not need it.
Should You Use This Feature?
This feature is convenient if the PS5 is your main gaming device and you want one-button startup. It is less useful in a busy entertainment setup where several devices share the same TV. If the console wakes when you do not want it to, disable HDMI Device Link or turn off the TV’s power sync option while leaving manual input switching enabled.
Best Configuration
For the most reliable result, connect the PS5 directly to a HDMI port that supports your TV’s best gaming features, enable HDMI Device Link on the console, enable HDMI-CEC on the TV, and remove unnecessary HDMI devices from the signal chain while testing.
