Food dishes are on the other side of the cooking game mechanic in Breath of the Wild when compared to Elixirs. Food dishes are typically made up of…food. If you pick up meat, mushrooms, herbs, fish, vegetables and so many other things in the game that you would eat in the real world can also be cooked and eaten in Breath of the Wild. Food dishes are usually used to refill hearts and can often provide a bonus such as a resistance to the cold.
Cooking any piece of food on it’s own will always increase the number of hearts that it restores. This is a bit wasteful though as combining 2 or more items together can often result in the total amount of hearts being triple and will often give a buff. The main issue is knowing the best recipes to use in the game. I will attempt to list as many useful recipes as possible here and list what the buffs and results that you get from them.
Before you waste too much time looking for existing recipes, you should read the post about understanding recipe buffs in this walkthrough. The ingredients can differ, but the end result will be the same thing with a different name. You can save a lot of time by learning how these work before wasting time hunting down specific ingredients when you could replace it with something similar and get the same result.
The recipes below are broken up into sections to explain what you get for certain ingredients. You should also be aware that you do not need to use any of the recipes below to get a meal with a certain buff. If you check out the section of this walkthrough that explains how status buffs work, you can simply cook one of any item that contains the keyword and it will create a cooked version that gives you the buff. However, the recipes below are far more potent and will also restore much more health.
