Square Enix has announced DRAGON QUEST VII REIMAGINED, a modern remake of the 2000 RPG classic DRAGON QUEST VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The reveal came during the Nintendo Direct on September 12, 2025.
The game is set to launch on February 5, 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store on Windows. Pre-orders are live from the date of the announcement.
Positioned as a standalone, epic single-player adventure, DRAGON QUEST VII REIMAGINED adopts a hand-crafted, living storybook aesthetic while honoring the original’s spirit. The art direction reimagines Akira Toriyama’s character designs in a fully 3D style, paired with a redesigned UI and other quality-of-life touch-ups.
What’s new in the remake
Square Enix highlights an enhanced, streamlined narrative with optional side quests, an overhauled turn-based battle system introducing new mechanics like Moonlighting and Let Loose, and a cast led by returning favorites Keifer and Maribel. Exploration spans multiple worlds, aiming to preserve the scale and discovery of the classic with clearer progression and modern conveniences.
Editions and bonuses
A Physical Collector’s Edition is available for pre-order exclusively via the SQUARE ENIX e-STORE. It includes the standard game, a SteelBook case, a Slime plush, a ship-in-a-bottle figure, and DLC packs. For digital buyers, the Digital Deluxe Edition offers 48 hours of early access, a unique costume, and additional paid DLC packs.
An Early Bird Bonus applies to all editions, granting a DRAGON QUEST VIII costume and Seeds of Proficiency. Digital purchases also come with a Slime Shield unique to each platform.

Whether you’re returning to remember the tale or stepping into Estard and beyond for the first time, this remake aims to modernize a landmark RPG without losing its charm—bringing updated combat, cleaner questing, and a refreshed visual identity to a sprawling journey across time and worlds.
