The PlayStation game console was developed as a result of a failed business deal between Sony and Nintendo back in 1988. Nintendo needed a disc drive for the SNES console and was looking for Sony to create this for them. The end result of this was the creation of the PlayStation, which has gone on to become one of the most successful video game console brands of all time.
Since the release of the first console, Sony has released a new PlayStation system with every console generation. Several variations of these systems have also been released to reduce power usage and increase system performance via hardware upgrades.
Sony has also released two handheld PlayStation systems to date. The first being the PSP which was later followed by the PS Vita. As of 2020, it appears that Sony has withdrawn from the handheld gaming market for the foreseeable future.
With the massive boom of the popularity of virtual reality gaming, Sony has released a VR headset for the PS4 known as the PSVR which has been able to bring affordable VR gaming to a large portion of the gaming community.
The online network, known as PSN was introduced with the PS3 and has become an integral part of how people play video games on these systems. Gamers create an online profile with a PSN username attached to it. They can then play against others online. A monthly subscription fee was required, via PS Plus, for online play with the PS4.
