In Astroneer, scrapping items is an essential component of the gameplay. It allows you to recycle unwanted, damaged, or broken items, turning them into Scrap which can be turned into usable resources. This guide will cover how to scrap items, manage debris, and interact with broken buildings found on the planets.
Step 1: Understand what you can Scrap
- Debris: These are broken, unusable pieces you find scattered throughout the planets. They can range from tiny pieces to massive structures.
- Unused Items: Any items you’ve created that you no longer need can be scrapped as well, including placed objects like platforms and rovers.
Step 2: Obtain a Shredder
To scrap items and debris, you first need a shredder. You can print a shredder using the following materials:
- Medium Shredder: Requires 2 Iron.
- Large Shredder: Requires 2 Tungsten Carbide and 2 Iron.
The type of shredder you need will depend on the size of the items you want to scrap.
Step 3: Scrap the Items
- Drag the unwanted items or debris to the shredder.
- Press the ‘Use’ button and the shredder will start processing the items into scrap.

Step 4: How to Handle Debris
Debris can be a source of useful resources. They can’t be used as they stand, but they can be salvaged by shredders for scrap. Debris can be broken down by the shredder into Scrap, which can be further processed into useful resources.
Dealing with Broken Buildings
Broken buildings found across the planets are classified as Platform-type debris and these can be shredded using a large shredder to yield Scrap. After the shredding process, the Scrap can be traded for resources in the Trade Platform, or used to print new items.
Step 5: Managing the Scrap
After scrapping your items, you’ll be left with Scrap. This can be used on the Trade Platform to trade for other resources.
- Drag the Scrap to the Trade Platform.
- Use the panel to select the resource you want to trade for.
- Confirm the trade and wait for the rocket to return with your new resources.
