Shrines in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom are small, self-contained puzzle rooms or combat trials that are scattered across the game’s open world. Each shrine is its own mini dungeon that will challenge the player using puzzles that play on the games various mechanics and abilities to vary the obstacles.
Upon entering a shrine, Link will face a unique challenge that can range from physics-based puzzles, combat trials against formidable enemies, or sometimes riddles. These trials are designed to test the player’s resourcefulness, combat skills, or understanding of the game’s mechanics.
Upon completion of a shrine, Link is usually rewarded with a Light of Blessing, which he can exchange for additional heart containers or stamina vessels. There are some exceptions where the reward is different, such as in the combat trials, where Link might receive powerful weapons or equipment as a reward. Some shrines also contain treasure chests with useful items or equipment.
All shrines emit a blue/green glow with a spiral of light that trails high above the stone which makes them easier to spot from a distance, especially at night or from high vantage points.
