What should a new player know before getting into this game?
Asked by PaperComet
I’ve recently picked up World of Warships and would like to learn the different ship types, ideally working toward Tier 6 or 7. Is there much to do beyond player-versus-player battles, and which lines are a good place to start?

There are several ways to play, including battles against computer-controlled opponents and structured Operations, as well as player-versus-player modes. Campaigns and missions are available too, but which battle modes count can depend on the specific task, so check its requirements before committing to it.
For a first line, battleships give you time to learn aiming and positioning, though they are slow to change direction. Cruisers are more mobile but can be punished quickly for showing too much side. Destroyers and carriers have their own demanding jobs, so there’s no need to rush into all four types at once.

One thing to set expectations on: it has plenty of ships and historical references, but it’s an arcade game, not a naval simulation. The combat rules and ship performance are shaped around gameplay, so historical roleplay may be part of the fun, but it won’t always match how a ship worked in real life.
I’d try a few lines rather than pick a whole nation based on one famous ship. Play through the early tiers, see which style feels good, and keep an eye on how each ship helps its team. Spotting and taking useful positions can matter just as much as damage.

Tier 6 or 7 is a reasonable goal, but don’t treat reaching it as a race. Staying at a lower tier until you’re comfortable with aiming, concealment, and when to retreat can make the next ships a lot less frustrating.
If you mainly want relaxed sessions, try the cooperative battles and Operations first. They’re still combat-focused, but they give you room to learn the maps and ship controls. Check the mode and ship requirements for each activity, since not every mission works everywhere.
