Should I just leave a flank if a Pioneer is there?

Asked by Mossy Teacup

When I’m playing a destroyer, a Pioneer holding a flank makes it hard to get close enough to spot without risking a lot of damage. Is pulling back the sensible play, or is there a better way to handle it?

If you’re exposed and the radar can reach you, backing off is a reasonable choice. You don’t have to keep contesting that exact patch of water. Save your health, watch where the Pioneer moves, and look for a safer angle or a chance to help elsewhere.

I’d treat its radar range as the main boundary, rather than trying the usual close-in bait when the ship can detect and fire on you from farther away.

That makes sense. I’d still keep an eye on the flank from cover or at a distance, so pulling back doesn’t mean giving up all information about it.

I wouldn’t automatically abandon the whole side, but I also wouldn’t charge in just to prove the destroyer can contest it. Use islands or other cover where the map allows, and coordinate with teammates who can pressure the Pioneer or help provide vision. If there’s no safe way to do that, rotate and make the ship choose between holding its position and responding elsewhere.

Be especially cautious about relying on a simple radar bait. With the stated difference between its detection and radar ranges, you may have little room to get clear once spotted.
