What single-player game has builds that really change how combat feels?

Asked by Quiet Lantern

I’m looking for a PC game with engaging combat and build choices that do more than add small damage bonuses. Unusual weapons or classes are a plus, and I’d rather avoid Soulslikes or games that rely on a long grind. I’ve enjoyed Baldur’s Gate 3, Hades, Grim Dawn, Cyberpunk 2077, and modded XCOM 2.

Tales of Maj’Eyal could fit if you’re open to turn-based combat and a more old-school look. It has a wide range of classes and active abilities, so builds can change what you do in a fight rather than just boost one damage type. The roguelike structure is a bigger departure from story-driven games, though.

It’s a good one to consider if build planning matters more than cinematic presentation.

Try Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen if you want real-time combat and distinct ways to fight. Its vocations give you different weapon styles and combat roles, which may scratch the class-and-weapon itch without leaning on tiny stat upgrades. It’s more about action and timing than turn-based planning.

It’s worth checking a few vocation previews first to see whether the combat style appeals to you.

Noita is a different kind of option if unusual weapons matter more to you than traditional classes. You build and modify magical wands, and the combinations can make combat feel very different from run to run. It’s a demanding action game, so it may be a miss if you want a more forgiving pace.
