How do you check an RPG project before backing it?

I’ve seen concerns about projects promising PDFs or virtual tabletop assets but delivering something different. What’s worth checking before I back one?

Read the deliverables closely, especially the file formats and what the assets are meant to do. A Google Doc isn’t the same as a finished PDF, and images collected in a document may not be ready to use in a virtual tabletop. Look for sample files, then ask the creator for a direct answer if the wording is vague.

Check earlier projects and look at examples of what was actually delivered, not just the current pitch. Updates and replies can also show how the creator handles delays or concerns. Treat complaints as a reason to investigate, rather than proof on their own, and see whether there are specific examples you can verify.

I’d separate questions about the finished product from claims about how it was made. It can be hard to judge whether a project used AI just by looking at a page. If that matters to you, ask about the process and check whether the answer is clear. For the buying decision, focus on concrete things you can inspect, like samples and stated file formats.
