Could Steam show when it’s updating on Linux?
On some Linux setups, Steam can appear to do nothing while it updates before launching. Would a visible progress indicator help, or is there a better way to handle this?

A small update window with progress would make the wait much less confusing. If the client needs time before it can open, showing that it is working is a simple bit of feedback that is missing from the quiet launch.
For a quick check, launching Steam from a terminal can show whether an update is happening. Just keep that terminal open while Steam runs, since closing it can also close the client. It is a useful workaround, but not a very friendly everyday solution.
The confusing part is that the same quiet startup can happen with different ways of installing Steam, so this does not sound limited to one package type. Even a simple status message would tell people to wait rather than assume the app failed to start.

That seems like the clearest fix. A person should not have to guess whether the launch has stalled.
