I’m looking for a mystery game with engaging gameplay, a strong cast, and some character revelations that land. I’ve played L.A. Noire, Heavy Rain, and Hotel Dusk, and I’m open to different art styles or a dialogue-heavy game.

Disco Elysium is a strong fit if you want a detective whose personal life is tangled up in the case. It’s very dialogue-heavy, with role-playing choices shaping how you investigate and relate to people. Less about collecting clues in a traditional way, more about piecing together people and motives.

For a game where the deduction itself is the fun part, try The Case of the Golden Idol. You study scenes and work out what happened by connecting names, objects, and details. It has a distinctive look and plenty of mysteries, though the character drama is more understated than in Hotel Dusk.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is a good pick if you want puzzles, a memorable cast, and story turns that keep changing how you see the characters. It’s more playful than a gritty crime thriller, but the mystery is central and the art style has a lot of personality.

Take a look at Tangle Tower for a more classic murder-mystery setup. You investigate locations, question suspects, and solve puzzles while getting to know a colorful cast. It’s lighter in tone, but it scratches the character-and-clue-solving itch without relying on realistic graphics.

Tangle Tower sounds especially close to what I had in mind. I like having actual investigation and puzzles alongside the character writing.
