Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Trophy Guide

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a fairly easy game to platinum, assuming you have the time to do so. Most of the trophies revolve around completing certain missions, gaining collectibles, or reaching 100%. The hardest trophy in the game by far would be completing every mission with an S rank. as any "cheats" wouldn't be allowed.

Trophy Guide & Road Map [toggle]

Step 0: Background Goals

This isn't really a step as everything here will just be done in the background. All of these trophies are just things you'll get naturally while playing and can land in any of the other three steps. As long as you remember to work on these between missions you'll earn them long before you S rank everything. Here you will earn:

pstbronzeTo The Rescue

Step 1: Complete the campaign, max bond

In this step all you need to do is acquire the max bond with your three buddies and complete all 51 missions. It doesn't matter what rank you get or how many mission tasks you complete, you'll be coming back for these later. You should also try completing a mission as a combat staff member to earn the pstbronzeApprentice trophy. In this step you will earn:

pstbronzePhantom Limb
pstbronzeGears Turn
pstbronzeCry Havoc
pstbronzeTrusty Steed
pstbronzeMan's Best Friend
pstbronzeWar Buddy

Step 2: Side Ops

Side ops are much easier than main missions, and each only takes 1-5 minutes depending on how long it'd take for you to get to each one. That said there are A LOT of side ops (I believe around 150), so this can take a few hours. While you're going for this trophy you should also complete an FOB mission to get it out of the way. In this step you'll earn:

Step 3: Replay Campaign

This is the hardest and most time consuming step in this game. You will need to replay most missions and earn an S-rank and compete each mission task (basically extra challenges) in each and every level. This will likely take up half the time you spend on the game.

Step 4: Clean Up

There isn't much left to do. You might have a few things left that are needed to be developed, but you shouldn't be too much further away from developing the 300 items and maxing out mother base. The only thing you'll probably have trouble with here are the animal and blueprint trophies. Here you may need to earn:

pstgoldLocked and Loaded

Obtain all trophies.

Congrats on a hard earned platinum.

Complete "PROLOGUE: AWAKENING" mission.

Story related and cannot be missed.

This is the prologue to the game and will be the first trophy you earn. The first mission in extremely long, but bear through it, the rest of the game is rewarding.

Complete "PHANTOM LIMBS" mission.

Story related and cannot be missed.

Phantom limbs is mission 1 and is much faster than the prologue.

Complete "WHERE DO THE BEES SLEEP?" mission.

This trophy is story related and cannot be missed.

This mission is mission 6 and is fairly fast to finish.

Complete "HELLBOUND" mission.

Story related and cannot be missed.

Hellbound is mission number 12 in the main story.

Complete "TRAITORS' CARAVAN" mission.

Story related and cannot be missed.

Traitors' Caravan is mission 16. Be sure to bring explosives.

Complete "VOICES" mission.

Story related and cannot be missed.

This is mission 20 in the main story.

Complete "METALLIC ARCHAEA" mission.

Story related and cannot be missed.

Metallic Archaea is mission 29 and has you fend off a bunch of skulls.

Complete "SAHELANTHROPUS" mission.

Story related and cannot be missed.

Sahelanthropus is mission 31 and is the final boss to the main game, and once defeated will open up the post story.

Complete "A QUIET EXIT" mission.

Story related and cannot be missed.

Simply maximize your bond with Quiet, unequip the Butterfly emblem if you have it equipped, then play a few missions or Side Ops. Return to the ACC, then do the Side Op you've been given. This will immediately lead into a mission, which will unlock this trophy at its completion.

Story related and cannot be missed

This is mission 46 in the story and is the last story mission in the game (other than extreme and stealth varients of previous missions).

Complete a mission using a Combat Unit staff member.

All you have to do for this trophy is play a mission as a combat staff member. When loading up a mission you'll notice you can choose a character to play as as well as an outfit to change into. Just choose any character other than Snake and complete a mission with them. This trophy will pop once you complete the mission.

Complete all missions.

There are 51 missions in total, some can take an hour to complete while others may take five minutes. Once all 51 are finished you will earn the trophy.

Complete all mission tasks.
Side Quest

The mission tasks are like side objectives for each main mission. Some are simple things like "extract the target", while others may be more challenging such as extracting all of the vehicles in mission 9. You can view each task on the objectives screen on you iDroid, whether before the mission or during it. It should also be noted that you DO NOT need to complete each objective on a single run, so you could keep replaying a level several times to take out one task at a time.

Most tasks are pretty self explanitory, but here is a guide for each mission task.

Complete all missions with an S rank.

By far the hardest trophy in the game, you earn an S rank for acquiring 130,000 points in a mission, which you can gain by completing mission tasks, not getting any alerts, not killing anyone, and not using reflex. For an in depth guide for each mission, check out Powerpyx on YouTube, he has a complete guide for S ranking each mission in the game.

Here is his playlist.

Complete a SIDE OP.
Side Quest

See pstsilverAchieved

Complete all "Mine Clearing" SIDE OPS.
Side Quest

See pstsilverAchieved. All you need to do are the mine clearing side ops.

Complete all SIDE OPS.
Side Quest

There are a total of 157 side ops in the game, however most will only take up to five minutes for you to complete. Many are as simple as extracting a prisoner, collecting a blueprint, or removing some mines, while others can be a bit more challenging. This link will provide guides for each side op:

Capture an outpost or guard post.

You will almost certainly get this trophy within the first ten minutes of your open world gameplay. Most outposts have between three and six soldiers. Just kill the guards guarding it and you'll pop the trophy. There are also certain missions that have tasks to clear out outposts, so you'll earn this trophy while going for some for pstsilverAchieved or pstsilverExecuted if nothing else.

Complete all key Dispatch Missions.
Side Quest

The key dispatch missions will always be the top OFFLINE dispatch mission on your dispatch missions log on the iDroid. Whenever you have the oppurtinity to, send out some soldiers to work on the missions as this is extremely time consuming. There are a total of 20 key dispatch missions that you will need to complete, however you don't actually do anything other than send your soldiers out on them and wait. You can fail these missions, but the loss isn't really too severe, other than having to restart the mission.

Play an "Infiltration" FOB mission.

This is the only trophy in the game that actually requires an internet connection, however you do not need to know any friends or play with other players in order to acquire it. All you need to do is play the game until mission 21: The War Economy. Once you've progressed this far you will unlock the ability to attack other players' bases. All you need to do is attack one, you don't even need to win in order to gain the trophy.

Make D-Dog available for deployment.

You can find D-Dog in a number of ways after mission 4, but the easiest way to find him is to load up mission 4, stand still for a bit, and D-Dog will run up to you as a little pup. Continue playing the game and over time he'll grow up into a large dog. After a few cutscenes at Motherbase D-Dog will be available for deployment and you'll earn the trophy.

Make Quiet available for deployment.

Quiet can be available after completing mission 11. After a few more missions Quiet will agree to join you on missions and you'll get this trophy.

Raise bond with D-Horse to the maximum.

D-Horse is the first buddy you will obtain and is fairly easy to increase his bond level. All you need to do is ride him around, carry people on his back, and once you unlock the ability to, tell him to "do it" in which he will deficate. All three of these actions will increase his bond over time.

Raise bond with D-Dog to the maximum.

D-Dog is the easiest buddy to raise his bond with, as all you need to really do is use him and pet him with pstriangle while next to him. He will likely be the second companion you obtain and as long as you use him you should easily get this trophy.

Raise bond with Quiet to the maximum.

Quiet may be the most pasive of the three buddies to raise her bond as all you need to do is keep the "cover me" option in her command wheel active. Her bond slighty increases with each person she kills/tranquilizes.

Fulton extract an enemy soldier.

Once you get the ability to fulton exract people, incapacitate some enemy soldiers, run up to their unconscious body, and hold pstriangle. Once the soldiers gets lifted into the air you'll earn the trophy.

Interrogate an enemy soldier.

There are two ways to do this. After you gain an interpretor for a language, walk up behind and enemy quietly and aim your gun at them. They'll drop theirs and you can interrigate them for this trophy.

Extract a female prisoner.

There aren't many females in the game, however in mission 9 if you land in the lower left landing zone and turn around you'll see a female walking through the desert. Extract her for the trophy.

Increase Mother Base staff to 50 or more personnel.

See pstsilverBattalion.

Increase Mother Base staff to 250 or more personnel.

This may sound daugnting, but all you need to do is extract every soldier you see. By the time you beat the game you'll have well over 1000 soldiers, making this trophy one of the easier trophies.

Raise all Teams/Units to level 50.

There are seven different teams that you need to level up:

  • Combat
  • Defense
  • Base Development
  • Support
  • R&D
  • Intel
  • Medical

The easiest way to do this is go around extracting any soldiers you see that have an A stat or higher. This will come naturally as long as you remember to extract soldiers and don't dismiss anyone.

Develop 50 or more development items.

See pstgoldLocked and Loaded.

Develop 100 or more development items.

See pstgoldLocked and Loaded.

Develop 300 or more development items.

When you open your iDroid, go to the Motherbase tab and go to the development option. Start develping weapons and tools and after 300 you'll earn this trophy, as well as the two previous tiers of it. This trophy will be very costly in both GMP and time, but as long as you start developing things as soon as you get the chance to, you'll earn this trophy long before the platinum.

Construct all available platforms for Mother Base.

Mother base platforms can get very expensive in terms of fuel and common metal, but as long as you keep doing FOB missions you will easily get the resources required to fully upgrade MB. There are four levels for each section of the mother base, and it should be noted that the FOBs don't matter for this trophy, you only need to focus on the actual Mother Base.

Develop a nuclear weapon.

Once you finish the first chapter (mission 31) you will be able to make nuclear weapons from the resource tab, but at a cost:

  • 750,000 GMP
  • 75,000 Fuel
  • 50,000 Common Metal

And it will take 24 hours to actually construct. If you are connected to the internet then you can just turn your game on in a day and the nuke will be built, but if you are offline then you will need to actually be playing the game for 24 hours.

Dispose of a nuclear weapon.

Once you've built your nuke, you'll see an ability to dismantle it. You'll want to just do this and you will get this trophy instantly.

Earn a total of 10,000,000 GMP or more.

By the time you beat the game you will have earned far more than just 10 mil, but if you really want to get this trophy quickly then you could easily sell any precious metal that you obtain, as it's not really used much (you might not want to sell all of it, but definitely most), and each piece you sell is worth one grand, making it real easy to rack up a few million GMP.

Extract all wild animal species.

Wild animals are a sort of collectible in the game. They don't really do anything other than go to your conservation platform and rack up some GMP, and there are lots of different species for you to extract to motherbase. It's basically a Metal Gear version of Pokemon.

To extract most animals you're going to want a gun with tranq rounds, put the animal to sleep, then extract it. However smaller animals like mice can just be put to sleep and picked up off the ground. You may also want to invest in a capture cage to lure certain animals inside to capture them. There are also legendary animals that can only be found on certain side ops and you need these to earn the trophy as well.

Here is a guide to all the animal locations: Animals Guide

Obtain all blueprints and key items.

Most blueprints will be fround randomly out in the wild at military bases and outposts, and can be pinpointed by interrigating soldiers near the base. Key items are found by doing certain missions and side ops and are used to make certain items and outfits. The following links show all the locations of the blueprints and key items:

Key Items

Obtain all memento photos.
Side Quest

There are 11 memento photos in the game, tied to the 'Extract the Wandering Mother Base Soldiers' Side Ops. Completing each of these missions earns 1 photo. After completing 01, return to Mother Base's medical platform. Find a door on the third floor of the center building that has a blue light above it. Enter the door and watch the cutscene. Now, you can continue this set of side ops. After completing each op, return to the aforementioned room, walk forward and press pstriangle when prompted. Complete all ten missions and repeat the above steps with each photo you gather. The final photo is stuck to the wall in the hallway leading into the blue light room. The trophy will unlock as soon as you collect the final photo.

Obtain the codename "Hero."

To get the codename "Hero" you must first complete mission 31 and have a total of 180,000 heroism. By the time you beat the game you may be between 100,000 and 125,000, the rest can easily be obtained by replaying mission 23 and fulton extracting all the children you see. you'll gain about 1,000 heroism per run so you'd only have to do this a few dozen times.

There is also some strange glitches that will grant a lot of heroism for completing side ops, however there doesn't seem to be any confirmed way of making this glitch happen. For now the best way to gain this trophy is to grind the heroism in said mission.
