The middle ages were pretty dark. Humans had established a fairly basic understanding of society and technology but a lot of it was very crude. A scrape from a rusty nail was enough to kill you. Chopping off legs and arms when they went bad was just a part of life.
Video games often draw inspiration from this time perioid and butter it up a bit to make it a more enjoyable gaming experience. I’m not sure anyone would get to excited having to play a game where the number one enemy is syphilis.
