Surge Deluxe Review

Surge Deluxe

Surge Deluxe is a puzzle game where you must match up blocks of the same color before your run out of time. It’s a traditional concept that never really gets old. You swipe your finger around to link the blocks, then remove your finger to destroy the blocks. It is wrapped together with a vibrant neon theme with lots of color and effects that are attractive to look at. The game comes with two game modes, play and puzzle. Play is just a standard timed game where you will have to clear level after level of blocks until you eventually get caught out and loose. Puzzle provides you with a specific block layout that you must clear and achieve a target score. Both game modes are enjoyable and are great to play if you have a few minutes to kill.

Visually the game is nice to look at. The neon theme provides a lot of strong and vibrant colours. Coloured electricity bolts appear when you link blocks together and a nice explosive effect is triggered when you clear blocks. The developers did a great job bringing life to this game through the visuals. It makes the game a lot more enjoyable to play when it looks this nice.

The gameplay is simple. You use your finger to link as many blocks of the same color together and then release your finger to clear them from the screen. There are bonus blocks that will give you score multipliers, bombs, color changers etc. in addition to special blocks you also have vents at either side of the area. You must clear all blocks in the way before being able to use them. Using the vents releases pressure which gives you more time to clear the remaining blocks. The vents are coloured like the blocks are, when you open a vent the matching color block will get a score bonus if cleared while the vent is still open.

Surge deluxe is fun to play In bursts when you have a short amount of time to kill. After a while the game becomes quite redundant and looses a lot of excitement. There are no real goals to keep you playing. You play for the high score and nothing more. A levelling system that unlocks weapons or powers that you can use in game would give you a better incentive to keep playing, but unfortunately this doesn’t exist. There is very little to keep you playing once you loose interest in getting the high score. This would be a good game to pick up in a sale for cheap. It’s nice to have a game that you can quickly play and not have to commit large amounts of time to. I enjoyed the game and I will probably keep it on my Vita as a handy game to play now and then, but don’t buy this game expecting to burn large amounts of game time.
