Game Mechanics

Reach for the Sun is a resource management game that uses three resources: water, nutrients, and starch. Their color bars are Blue, Green, and Yellow respectively.

Roots produce water and nutrients. Leaves use your water and/or nutrients to create starch. Your plant can only store a limited number of these resources, so you’ll want to expand your plant’s roots, leaves, and stems.

The overall duration of the game is at maximum 10 minutes. The 10 minutes will span all the months of the year to November. (The clock will tell you your remaining time) You must grow the fruits on all the female flowers by the end of the 10 minutes.

When you get to the flowering part, you need to pollinate the flower 3 times each before the fruit options is available.

Harmful Events
There are a few events that’ll occur which will attempt to hinder your progress. Most of them are easily preventable and only one will hurt you instantly.

1. Worm: Worms will burrow through the dirt underground and attach itself to your roots draining the nutrients and water that the root is producing. Simply click it until you rolls up and goes down.

2. Flying Bug: The flying bug will aim for your leaves. If you let it drain your leaves, your leaf will die causing you to replace it. Simply click it before it affects your leaf.

3. Frozen Leaves: Closer to the winter months, your plant leaves may freeze up. Simply click over the leaf and hold it down. A yellow orb appears (most likely a ball of warmth) which will defrost your leaves.

4. Blight: At times, your leaves will decay with blight and must be replaced. Click on the leaf and pull it away from the stem to remove it, then rebuild it. If you don’t remove the leaf early on, it’ll affect the rest of your plant.

Strategy

The first thing you want to do is start building roots. Roots should be your first focus, getting 3-4 additional roots before building the stem and leaves. Then from there, you’ll have to gauge when you expand for stems and leaves. You can leave the flowers for last. Doing them early will not hurt you.

Achievement Guide
Pro Botanist Pro Botanist
Purchased all four plants.

This excludes the Sunflower for sale at 1 seed at the start. You must buy the Toad Lily, Lilac, Squash, and Prickly Pear. This totals to 72 seeds.

Seedthrift Seedthrift
Purchased all plants and all upgrades.

See ‘Pro Botanist’ and ‘Ready for Anything’. The total number of seeds you need is 108 seeds. You start off with one seed. Seeds are given at the end of each session. Completing the sunflower scenario grants 12 seeds. The toad lily grants 20 seeds. The lilac grants 35 seeds. The squash grants 28 seeds. I’m unaware of how much the Prickly Pear gives, but it states that the seed return is ‘Medium’ as opposed to ‘High’ from the Lilac and Squash.

Subsequent lilac runs give 28 seeds, so it’s recommended that you do this one to farm seeds.

Ready For Anything Ready For Anything
Purchased all garden upgrades.

I’ll list these in the order I find them most useful.
1. Water Pail (20 Seeds) – increases water collected by roots; you essentially will not have to worry about water ever again.
2. Fertilizer (10 Seeds) – increases nutrients collected by roots; helps in the early game, but you will still run out in the end-game
3. Mulch (5 Seeds) – increases protection for plant and roots by lowering encounters with bugs and disease; very minimal effect due to these events being occasional.
4. Praying Mantis (30 Seeds) – automatically defends your plants from bugs; clicking them is not that hard, so a waste of seeds to buy this first.

Bare Bones Bare Bones
Fruited a flower without growing any extra leaves.

This is pretty straight forward and you can do it on any plant. Sunflower had the least parts, so I went with that one. You can upgrade the roots as you wish. But avoid making any NEW leaves aside from the two that you start with.

You’ll also have to build some stems to increase your starch cap in order to bare fruit. So do so accordingly.

Deluxe! Lilac Deluxe! Lilac
Grew all possible lilac parts.

Make sure that you have no remaining extensions to grow prior to baring the final fruit. The final fruit will end the game, exceeding the 10 minute timer will also end the game.

Deluxe! Toad Lily Deluxe! Toad Lily
Grew all possible toad lily parts.

Make sure that you have no remaining extensions to grow prior to baring the final fruit. The final fruit will end the game, exceeding the 10 minute timer will also end the game.

Deluxe! Squash Deluxe! Squash
Grew all possible squash parts.

The only thing I have to note about squash is that the pollen comes from the middle (or maybe last) flower you grow. It has two females and one male. The male is where you can spawn bees.

As for the achievements themselves, simply make sure that you have no remaining extensions to grow prior to baring the final fruit. The final fruit will end the game, exceeding the 10 minute timer will also end the game.

Deluxe! Sunflower Deluxe! Sunflower
Grew all possible sunflower parts.

Make sure that you have no remaining extensions to grow prior to baring the final fruit. The final fruit will end the game, exceeding the 10 minute timer will also end the game.
