I’m planning to upgrade to a PNY RTX 5080 this weekend for my build, which is about five years old. My CPU, monitor, and RAM are more recent, but I’m uncertain if my existing EVGA SuperNOVA 750 GA 750W PSU can support the new GPU. PCPartPicker indicates that even a 650W PSU should suffice for my setup. Other PSU calculators suggest similar wattage requirements. Currently, I’m running a 3070ti rated at 290W and haven’t faced power issues so far. I’m aware that modern GPUs can have transient spikes above their usual draw, so should I consider getting a higher-wattage PSU with better handling for such spikes? I don’t plan on overclocking or adding additional components, just possibly a couple of case fans. Can I stick with my current PSU until I make another major component upgrade in a year or two?

You’ll be fine with a 750W PSU. I have the same setup and after undervolting my RTX 5080, it peaks at around 290W, while gaming, it’s typically around 220-230W. The 5700X3D also doesn’t pull much, usually peaking at 105W. All told, you should max out at about 550W under heavy load, which leaves a comfortable margin for the rest of your components.
Thanks for the info! So is your PSU older too, or did you upgrade to a newer one?
