I’m currently gaming on a 27″ 1080p monitor while using Oculus Link/Steam VR for Assetto Corsa through my VR headset. I believe my PC sends a better resolution than 1080p to my headset, while the monitor just shows a 1080p view of the same game. I’d love to set up my sim rig in the living room, connecting it to a 65-inch 4K TV for a better viewing experience with friends. However, I’m concerned about the impact this might have on my VR performance. Playing games in 4K is pretty demanding on the GPU, so will having the TV mirror my VR display hurt my performance as if I were playing two games at once, or will it just replicate the VR resolution without stressing my GPU too much? My setup includes a 5070ti and a 12900kf, which should be decent, but I want to make sure it won’t hamper my VR experience before I go through the hassle of moving everything downstairs.

I use a 55-inch 4K TV as my main monitor, and I haven’t noticed any drop in performance while playing VR. I haven’t done any rigorous testing, though, so that might vary for each setup.
I did some tests a while back, and there was a small performance dip when mirroring gameplay on an extended display. It wasn’t a huge drop, but I noticed it. Generally, though, we often mirror games like Beat Saber to our TV without any issues, so it should be manageable.
Try it out and see! If your setup uses a good HDMI cable to connect the TV, it should be fine. A quick test won’t hurt, and you can adjust if needed.
Connecting the TV should just mirror your VR resolution, so there shouldn’t be major performance issues. You can display the same image on the TV without stressing your GPU more than usual. So, go ahead and set it up!
There can be a slight performance hit when you turn on mirroring, but it’s usually minor. As long as you keep the TV output set to the VR resolution, it should be fine. Just check your FPS to make sure everything runs smoothly!
Got it! I’ll monitor that and see how it goes.
Thanks! I appreciate the reassurance. I’ll try it out, it’ll be nice for everyone to watch.
