I’m trying to enjoy some Doom Eternal while I wait for the new game to drop. I’ve noticed that my gameplay doesn’t feel as smooth as I expected, and I discovered that V-Sync is limiting my frame rate to 120 FPS instead of letting it hit 240 FPS. How can I resolve this issue and get back that smooth gameplay?

I ran into a similar situation with another game. My monitor was set to 60 Hz, and I had capped my FPS to match, but I was only seeing 30 FPS. A workaround was to pump up the refresh rate to 120 Hz and limit my FPS to 60, which did the trick for me!
Have you checked your Windows settings or your monitor’s internal settings? Sometimes they can limit your refresh rate to 120 Hz. If you’re using an NVIDIA graphics card, check the NVIDIA Control Panel to ensure there aren’t any global or per-application FPS limits set.
This used to happen with my old monitor too, where it would stick around 60 FPS with V-Sync active, even though I had a 144 Hz monitor. Upgrading to a monitor with adaptive sync fixed my issues. If you haven’t tried that yet, it might really help your situation!
It sounds like V-Sync is capping your FPS because your game isn’t hitting 240 FPS. V-Sync is designed to match your frame output with your monitor’s refresh rate, so if it’s only getting 120 FPS, that’s all it will display. We can dig deeper to figure this out, though!
I checked and if I turn V-Sync off, I can reach over 400 FPS, so it doesn’t seem like that’s the problem.
