I got a brand new Rig 900 Max HX headset as a gift and played on Xbox for about an hour with no issues. But when I tried to turn up the volume using the headset’s volume wheel, it kept spinning and made the usual volume change sounds, yet the actual game audio cut out completely. The headset still plays the volume beep when I turn the wheel but no sound from the game comes through. I tested the headset on my phone via Bluetooth and it works fine, so it doesn’t seem like the wheel is broken. I also connected it to my PC via USB, switched to PC mode, and it worked perfectly. However, when I plug it into my Xbox USB ports and try both PC and console modes, the audio won’t play and the wheel doesn’t control volume properly. I’m stuck and have found no fixes online. Is there something specific about the Xbox connection causing this?

I had a similar problem with a different headset where the volume wheel felt like it was working but audio wouldn’t change or would cut out on Xbox. In my case, the fix was updating the Xbox system software fully and also checking if the headset firmware had any updates via PC. Worth a shot to connect it to your PC and see if any software updates are available for your Rig 900 HX that might improve Xbox support.
One workaround might be to use the Xbox’s volume controls directly or adjust volume in the game settings, bypassing the headset wheel for now. Since you confirmed the wheel itself is physically fine and works on other devices, it sounds like the Xbox connection is the root cause. Hopefully a future Xbox update or headset firmware patch will resolve it.
Sometimes the issue is with USB compatibility or the Xbox not fully supporting certain wireless headsets’ control functions. Since your headset works fine on the PC and Bluetooth devices but not when plugged into Xbox, you might want to try using a different wireless dongle if possible, or contact the headset manufacturer’s support. They might have specific fixes or replacements for this type of problem.
Sounds like a weird compatibility hiccup between the headset and Xbox. Since the volume wheel still makes sounds but doesn’t control audio, it might be an issue with how the Xbox is recognizing the device’s audio controls. Have you tried completely resetting your Xbox or doing a power cycle? Sometimes that refreshes USB device connections and can fix stuff like this.
I haven’t checked for firmware updates yet but that makes sense. I’ll connect to PC and see if I can find anything to update. Thanks for the tip!
