Ramos, the Grass-type Gym Leader in Kalos, is frequently mentioned as one of the most forgotten gym leaders in Pokémon X and Y. Despite his cozy, cottagecore vibe, his fun gym design, and his unique use of Jumpluff, many players barely remember him. I’m curious why that is. What makes Ramos so underappreciated compared to other gym leaders in the Kalos region?

Part of why he’s overlooked is because X and Y’s gym leaders aren’t as memorable overall. Unlike past generations where gym leaders had strong stories, unique designs, or tough challenges, many Kalos leaders are kinda forgettable. Ramos doesn’t use Mega Evolution, doesn’t have a standout personality, and he’s an older, more chill guy which doesn’t exactly scream “memorable boss.” His ace, Gogoat, is cool but not super iconic either.
Honestly, Ramos tends to fly under the radar mainly because his gym battle is pretty easy and he doesn’t play a big role in the game’s story. His gym puzzle is neat, but the battle itself isn’t much of a challenge compared to others. Plus, you usually have some powerful Pokémon like Mega Lucario or Lapras by the time you fight him, which makes it even simpler.
Kalos gym leaders in general don’t get as much love as those from other generations, and Ramos is kinda stuck in the middle of that. He comes right after Korrina, who has that cool Mega Lucario hype, and before Clemont, who’s a main anime character. So between those two, Ramos sort of gets overshadowed. Also, the game’s pacing speeds up after his gym, so the whole area just feels rushed and forgettable.
Yeah, the jump from the earlier gyms to Ramos’s spot is pretty jarring. His gym town, Coumarine City, kinda blows by quickly and doesn’t leave much impression.
Another thing is that Ramos’s gym sits between two pretty significant moments: right after the hype Mega Evolution tower with Korrina, and before the Team Flare power plant section. His gym just gets kind of lost in the shuffle story-wise. Also, you get the Grass Knot TM at his gym, which is helpful but not very exciting compared to some other rewards.
Right, the Grass Knot TM is nice but doesn’t feel as rewarding as other gym prizes. Makes his gym feel less impactful for sure.
Totally, I always felt Ramos had a more grounded, relaxed vibe compared to some of the flashier gym leaders, which some folks just might not find as exciting.
