I have an RX 580 2048SP GPU paired with an Intel i5 3470 CPU. Most games run well on this setup — I’m getting high settings in Valorant and Minecraft with shaders without issues. But when I play Roblox at graphics level 5, the fps randomly drops from 60 to 30, causing lots of lag. I’ve tried updating drivers and tweaking settings, but nothing helps. CPU usage never goes above 60%, while the GPU load fluctuates wildly between 0% and 100% really fast. Could this be my processor holding me back, or is something else causing these performance spikes?

From what you’re describing, it sounds like background processes or Windows overhead might be affecting your Roblox experience. Even if you close most apps, Windows 10 can still have background services eating resources. Plus, your i5 3470 is quite old compared to newer CPUs. For example, your sister’s laptop with a modern Core i3 might outperform your setup in games like Roblox because of better single-thread performance and overall efficiency. Upgrading your processor could definitely help smooth out those fps drops, especially since your GPU seems to fluctuate a lot which might be caused by your CPU bottlenecking or power management issues.
It might help to check how each CPU core is performing during your Roblox sessions. Sometimes one core gets maxed out while others stay idle, which can cause those FPS dips. If any single core hits around 80-90% usage consistently, that’s a sign your CPU is bottlenecking the game. You mentioned your overall CPU usage is around 60%, but that might be spread unevenly across cores. Try a tool like Task Manager or Ryzen Master (if AMD) to see individual core loads.
Good shout, I’ll keep an eye on the per-core usage and see if any cores spike too much. Usually they hover around 40-50%, but I’ll double-check while running Roblox. If I find anything, I’ll post screenshots—maybe there’s another culprit.
Yeah, I keep everything shut down before playing, only drivers and essentials are running. I noted my sister’s laptop with the i3 1115g4 runs Roblox smoother, even though I thought my RX 580 should be stronger. My motherboard doesn’t support TPM 2.0 so I’m stuck on Windows 10 for now. Thinking an upgrade might be the way to go.
