Every time I try to fish in the game, the “fish” command is grayed out. Is there something I’m missing, or are fishing spots really this tricky to find?

If you find water that you can swim in, you should be able to fish from there! Sometimes you just need to get a bit closer or even crouch down. I prefer fishing in first-person view for better control. Just experiment a bit!
Remember to get out of any power armor you might be in before you try to fish. If you can swim in the water, fishing should work.
I think one of the best ways to find spots is to wander around and scout out good pools or rivers. Set up your camp nearby so you can have everything ready. I’ve had some luck near Cranberry Bog and also at another lake lower down from Spruce Knob. Those were really easy to find!
You need to make sure you’re at the right depth. If you’re only 2 feet deep in water that’s only 3 feet deep, the fish aren’t going to bite. It gets tricky when the angles are off. Try finding a spot where you can drop your line in a deeper area.
I’ve noticed that the water has to be deep enough for you to actually be able to swim. If you’re fishing in shallow areas, good luck! Those spots can be super frustrating because there aren’t many deep ones around. It’s probably easier to just focus on your daily fishing quests instead of hunting for fish right now.
