I’ve been tinkering with my gaming setup, which includes an AMD Ryzen 5600 and AMD 6700xt with the latest GPU drivers. My OS is on a 500GB SATA SSD (Ext4) and my games are stored on a 1TB NVME SSD (also Ext4). Recently, I was thrilled with how well games were running on PopOS with KDE—especially after disabling the compositor using shift+alt+f12. It worked wonders in ‘The Finals’ initially, but after a reboot, everything went downhill. Suddenly, my FPS dropped to around 15, and even Steam and Discord refused to launch unless I turned the compositor back on. I didn’t have backups enabled, which was a rookie mistake, so I couldn’t revert any changes. I tried switching to Mint with better results but still faced issues, especially with performance dropping even below 1 FPS when disabling the compositor in KDE. I’m unsure if my previous experiences (including the power button mishaps) might have triggered these problems. I’m considering going back to PopOS and hoping to see better performance again—any insights or suggestions?

Running KDE on a newer distro is definitely a smart move! Even if the compositor is acting up, most modern versions allow better resource management. Just keep an eye out for updates frequently; they can often resolve weird performance bugs over time. Good luck!
I feel you on the struggle! With modern dashboards like Plasma 6, the option to disable the compositor isn’t as straightforward. Switching distros might help you avoid those weird FPS drops, especially since newer versions of Wayland have better optimization. Have you tried checking your game settings as well, sometimes those can affect overall performance too?
It sounds like you’ve been through quite the troubleshooting marathon! Have you considered trying a more modern distro with KDE Plasma 6, like Fedora? It has the latest updates and might handle Wayland and the compositor more smoothly. Mint and PopOS both use an older version of Plasma, which could be part of your performance issues. It’s worth the shot!
I’m also curious if there’s a noticeable difference in performance between Plasma 5 and 6 on Wayland. Did you find any specific changes when using these different versions?
Yeah, I’ve reviewed my settings but might give it another shot just to be sure. Every bit helps, right?
