I’ve noticed a lot of negativity towards Yona in Tears of the Kingdom, and honestly, I don’t get it. She’s portrayed as kind and sweet, kind of reminds me of Mipha. The hate seems to come mostly from ship wars, especially since Sidon looks really happy with her. Can we talk about why people dislike Yona so much and if it’s really justified?

A lot of the negativity actually stems from fans who were really hoping for Sidon and Link to be a couple. When that didn’t happen, some took it personally and ended up resenting Yona because she ‘took Sidon away,’ even though she’s a great character herself.
It’s mostly jealousy and shipping wars. Back when BotW came out, fans were obsessed with Sidon, and some wanted him to be Link’s boyfriend so badly that when Yona came along as his wife, it ruffled feathers. But honestly, Yona is kind and adds depth to Sidon’s character, so the hate feels pretty unfair.
There’s also this whole debate about representation. Some fans worry that having Yona as Sidon’s partner erases or ignores the chance for him to be gay or have a queer relationship with Link. But Sidon was never canonically gay, and Yona’s presence doesn’t erase anything — plus, bisexuality or fluidity could totally be a thing here. The hate often comes from concerns over representation rather than Yona herself.
Yeah, I get that representation matters a lot, but it’d be great if people didn’t take it out on Yona personally. She’s not the enemy here.
Honestly, I don’t think Yona gets genuine hate. From what I’ve seen, most people actually like her as Sidon’s loving and supportive partner. The supposed ‘hate’ often comes from online jokes or exaggerations rather than actual dislike.
That makes sense. It’s kind of sad that people are focusing on jealousy instead of just enjoying the story and character dynamics.
