I’ve been trying to play the game Totemori on my Linux system, but the native version just crashes. It starts, then it opens another window before closing again, and ultimately it crashes. Interestingly, the version running through Proton works perfectly fine. I’m curious if anyone knows why this is happening and if there’s a solution for the native version?

To troubleshoot, you’ll want to gather some terminal logs to check for missing dependencies or shared libraries. I play on Manjaro Linux, and it runs fine for me after I added it in Steam. I even managed to play the tutorial, which took a bit of control reprogramming. In Steam, I see it says: ‘Runs on this computer via Steam Play. Steam Linux Runtime 1.0 (scout) selected by you for this title.’ If you haven’t installed that runtime yet, give it a try!
Some games just don’t run well natively on Linux because of how they’re ported. The Proton version might actually run better since it’s often more up-to-date with fixes and compatibility. A lot of well-known titles, like Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, have similar issues. My suggestion? Just stick with the Proton version for now and maybe give some feedback to the developers about the native issues—it’s the best we can do at this point!
Totemori came out back in 2017, which means its native Linux version might have been released before Proton was around to help. A lot of games from that time have less than stellar Linux builds, especially since they’ve been improved upon with newer technologies like Vulkan in recent years. If you need more details on these improvements, it’s worth asking around since I’m not an expert myself.
