I’ve had my PS5 since it launched in 2020 and never had issues before, but lately, whenever I’m playing games—especially F1 23—it suddenly turns itself off and then sometimes struggles to turn back on. I’ve already cleaned the fan and heat sinks, but the problem keeps happening. Has anyone else dealt with this or knows what might be causing it? Any advice would be appreciated!

Your PS5 might be shutting down due to overheating in parts the system doesn’t always warn about—like the power supply. Some games that push the hardware hard, like Monster Hunter or F1 23, can trigger this if dust clogs up internal vents. In my case, cleaning just the vents and fan didn’t fully fix it, and I had to open up the console completely to remove dust trapped inside the power supply area. After a thorough cleaning, it hasn’t shut down once in over 150 hours of gameplay.
One thing to try is to clean the internal grill behind the turbine (fan). It’s a bit tricky but you can remove the main plates of the PS5, take out the turbine by unscrewing four screws, and then look inside using your phone’s camera with the flashlight on. If you see dust or debris blocking that grill, carefully brush it away. This helped stop my PS5 from turning off randomly, so it’s definitely worth checking out!
This sounds a lot like your console might be overheating due to dust buildup, especially around the power supply vents. Even if you’ve cleaned the fan and heat sinks, dust can pile up inside the power supply area, blocking airflow and causing your PS5 to shut down to protect itself. A friend had the same issue and found a big dust wall in the power supply vents. Once they cleaned it out, the random shutdowns stopped happening.
I’ve had similar shutdown problems, and for me, the culprit ended up being a faulty USB port on the back. My headset dongle stopped connecting, and after I unplugged it, the sudden shutdowns became far less frequent. Also, to help with heat, I started running a small external fan aimed at my console, and that’s really helped keep things stable.
That’s interesting! I didn’t realize the power supply vents could get clogged that badly. I’ll check that out next, thanks!
