Hi everyone,
I just bought my first gaming laptop for about $2100. I was aware there was a 2024 model with a vapor chamber, but that would set me back $850 more.
I have the version with an i9-13980HX and an RTX 4080, and I even upgraded it to 64GB RAM and made sure the BIOS is updated.
The problem is, my laptop keeps overheating and shutting down with every setting except for ‘Extreme Performance.’ Even on ‘Balanced’ mode, it doesn’t seem to boost the fan speed or properly throttle, leading to a sudden shutdown.
I’m okay with using the extreme setting for AAA games, but it’s frustrating that it happens even in some lighter games like VotV on ‘Balanced’ mode.
Is there any way to run non-AAA games on balanced mode without these issues? Is it normal for it to overheat and shut down on balanced?

It’s possible that there’s another issue if your fans are working at all in balanced mode but cooling isn’t effective enough. You might want to check out your laptop’s thermal paste or see if the fans need cleaning.
To help manage your temps, try modifying the power settings—specifically, adjust the maximum processor state from 100% to 99%. This change can reduce the heat by around 10 degrees Celsius and help prevent shutdowns.
It seems like there might be a problem specific to your unit, given that shutting down instead of throttling is unusual. I recommend reaching out to MSI support for a closer look at your laptop. They might suggest an EC reset or ask for logs from MSI Center. If needed, they could arrange repairs. Be cautious not to change the thermal paste yourself, or you might void your warranty. Changing RAM is safe though.
In the meantime, adjust the fan curve in MSI Center to keep the fans running at a higher speed.
I’ll contact MSI and see what they say. Only extreme performance seems to prevent shutdowns, so something’s definitely off. I’ve had bad experiences with other repair centers though, but fingers crossed MSI will be better. Also, my event viewer shows a lot of event 37s.
Yeah, the fans do run, just not very effectively. My laptop is only a couple of months old and I cleaned it when I added more RAM. Haven’t checked the thermal paste quality since it’s mostly new. Appreciate the advice, I’ll give it a try!
