I’ve been interested in getting into Warhammer games but I’m really hesitant because they seem to lose their player base pretty quickly. Whether it’s titles like Vermintide, Space Marines 2, or Darktide, they all start with a strong launch but then flatline after a few months. Given that Warhammer is a massive franchise with a dedicated fanbase and years of history behind it, I’m puzzled as to why these games can’t maintain a steady player count. I understand they’re more like a ‘live service lite,’ but even those usually keep players engaged longer. It’s frustrating for a series that should be supported well.

It’s really a mix of factors. Games Workshop works with many smaller studios, which leads to varying quality and often less post-launch support, so interest fades quickly. When they actually invest in titles like Total War: Warhammer, those seem to stick. But many others don’t really capture long-term interest.
Honestly, just enjoy the games without over-analyzing Steam charts! Like Space Marines, for instance, it’s primarily a single-player/co-op game with some online play, similar to titles like Mass Effect 3. Enjoy the game for what it is rather than just looking at numbers.
Exactly! I know a guy who only watches movies based on ratings. Why not just enjoy what you like?
A lot of these games have limited content which doesn’t hold players’ interest for long. After completing the main game, there isn’t much to keep you coming back. Total War games, on the other hand, seem to grab people for years.
Have you thought about checking out single-player Warhammer games? Rogue Trader, for instance, has been a fantastic experience for me!
I’m playing it right now and absolutely loving it! It captures the 40k vibe perfectly.
Vermintide has actually been doing pretty well and getting new content regularly. Same with Darktide—my friends may not play, but I always find people to team up with!
Definitely! If Vermintide is getting DLC, there must still be a solid player base.
So true! People kill their fun obsessing over stats and YouTube drama instead of just playing what they like.
