I recently completed Final Fantasy IV for the first time in years and decided to swap some characters for the final dungeon. I chose Yang over Edge, and I found Yang to be way more effective. He was hitting around 5000 damage with his Power move, especially since I had equipped him with his ultimate weapon. The main difference was survivability; Edge felt like a glass cannon to me. My character Rydia kept getting knocked out, and I spent so many Phoenix Downs trying to keep her alive. Honestly, if I had taken Edge, I think he would’ve just been knocked out constantly too. Yang’s solid damage output and higher HP made him a much more reliable choice. So I’m curious, what’s the appeal of Edge?

The original US release had Yang limited to just Fight and Kick, which made him less appealing compared to Edge’s Ninjutsu. In many versions, you couldn’t even use Yang during the final party. So, I guess people gravitated towards Edge because they never got to see Yang’s full potential. In the remasters, though, you can switch out characters, which changes the game!
Edge has his strengths, mainly with the Throw ability. He can toss weapons and shurikens, dealing up to 9999 damage! It’s pretty powerful if used correctly, despite his fragility.
I know you’re joking, but I would throw cows each time!
Sure, but Edge has a limited number of things he can throw. Yang’s Power move is always available without needing ammo.
A lot of people overlook that Edge should be using Blink to help survive despite his lower defense. Sure, it doesn’t guarantee survival, but it can buy him some time! I used to focus on elemental magic, but using that MP on Blink worked way better for me.
That makes total sense! I played the GBA version where I could swap, which is why I noticed the difference.
