I was playing in hardcore mode when a creeper approached me. I ran up to it, positioned myself right in front, and raised my shield while wearing full iron armor. However, I still ended up dying, and it felt like my shield did absolutely nothing. This is my first hardcore world in over a decade! I’m curious—why didn’t my shield block the explosion? Is this a bug? I love this world, so I ended up switching to survival with cheats. Should I keep playing in this world or start over since I died?

It sounds like you might not have deployed your shield quickly enough. Even if your shield was out before the explosion, you need to right-click (or the designated button) just before the blast hits to actually block damage. It can be tricky with creepers because they have a slight delay before detonating. If you’re not fast enough, you can still take fatal damage. Just watch those countdowns! Also, since you love the world, maybe keep playing it in survival but try to be extra careful next time!
Which edition are you playing? It matters because mechanics can be slightly different between Java and Bedrock. Just to confirm, was it Java?
Yep, I was playing Java!
Yeah, that makes sense. I’ve had similar mishaps before and ended up losing my hardcore worlds. It’s all about timing with those explosions!
