I’ve noticed that AMD has rolled out the RX 9060 XT and the RX 9070/9070 XT, but what’s up with the RX 9080 XT? Are there any plans for it, or did AMD decide to skip it altogether?

Some folks believe that the 9070 XT is essentially functioning as the 8800 XT of this generation, as AMD has adjusted their SKU naming to better compete with NVIDIA’s lineup. This might be one reason there’s no RX 9080 XT.
It seems unlikely that AMD will release a higher-end RDNA 4 GPU like the 9080 XT anytime soon. The focus right now appears to be on gaining market share and improving features rather than jumping straight into the high-end market. Until they’re ready for the UDNA architecture, we probably won’t see an 80 or 90 class GPU from them.
Numbers show that the RTX 4080 and its Super variant have outsold AMD’s 7900 XTX by around 3 to 1, based on the latest Steam Hardware survey. AMD’s larger GPUs didn’t materialize because it seems that serious gamers spending over $1000 tend to lean towards NVIDIA over AMD, especially since the 7900 XTX saw a boost in sales due to discounts recently.
It looks like AMD might have backed off from releasing higher-tier GPUs. The architecture they’ve got is solid, and cramming more compute units on a larger die could have really pushed them ahead, but they opted not to.
