I recently had an encounter while carrying a valuable chest. A sea monster aggroed onto our ship while my friend fought it off. I quickly tossed the chest onto a rowboat and headed towards the Reaper’s Hideout to sell the loot. However, a ghost ship started attacking us and seemed to ignore another player ship that was nearby, even while my friend returned to help me. I’ve never experienced a ghost ship that focused solely on one ship like that, so I’m wondering if there’s something about ghost ship encounters that I’m missing?

It sounds like you might be dealing with a roamer ghost ship. These ships are procedurally generated and don’t attack unless provoked. If you fired a shot or even just got too close, it could have considered that an attack. So, if you were rowing or otherwise approaching it before it started targeting you, that could explain its focus on your ship over the other nearby player.
Also, just to clarify, a ‘sea monster’ isn’t a thing in Sea of Thieves. If a skeleton ship spawns on you, it will usually focus on you unless you’ve given it a reason to go after someone else. Swimming or rowing towards it can count as an attack, making it see you as a threat. But don’t worry, if you just keep sailing away, often those creatures will lose interest and despawn as you get closer to land.
Thanks for the info! Looks like I might need to avoid getting too close to those roamer ships next time.
That makes sense! I never actually shot at it, but I was pretty close with the rowboat. Guess that might’ve triggered it.
