Hey folks! I recently made the jump to Linux (specifically Fedora), and I’m a total newbie with Linux gaming. I’ve been trying to play Half-Life 2, but every time I hit ‘Start Game’, I get hit with an error. Everything seems fine up until the loading screen. My setup is an i5 7th gen with 8GB RAM, a 256GB SSD, and UHD 620 graphics. Any advice or fixes for this issue?

Hey there! Have you checked your Steam compatibility settings? Make sure you’ve enabled Steam Play for all titles and try running the game using Proton instead of the native Linux version. Sometimes that makes a world of difference.
Fedora is great, but if you’re looking for something friendlier, consider starting with Linux Mint or Ubuntu. They’re generally easier for beginners, and you might never need to use the terminal if you don’t want to. It could simplify things while you get the hang of Linux gaming.
You mentioned you tried Half-Life 2 with Proton; make sure you’re not missing out on trying the native Linux version. Given that the Intel UHD 620 supports Vulkan well, you should be able to run it. Also, there’s a report on ProtonDB that might align with your issue.
If you’re sticking with Fedora, you might want to consider giving Nobara Linux a shot. It’s a Fedora variant that’s tweaked specifically for gaming, which might save you a lot of hassle in the long run. Alternatively, Bazzite is another Fedora-based distro that could be more user-friendly for gaming.
