I downloaded Sunset Overdrive years ago on my Xbox One through Games with Gold, and it’s been sitting in my library as an owned game since. It’s a single-player game, and as far as I know, it doesn’t need an internet connection to play. Right now, I don’t have a Game Pass subscription, but I tried downloading the game again. While the download completed, it won’t let me launch the game, saying I don’t have the proper license to play it despite it being in my library. Is it normal for single-player games obtained through a Gold subscription to act like this? I’m pretty bummed about it and hope there’s a way to still play it.

For Xbox 360 titles, you’re in luck! Those are yours to keep forever regardless of subscriptions. But for Xbox One games, they now require a Game Pass Core membership. It’s like you get a little taste but can’t keep all the goodies without paying. That’s where the changes have hit hard.
Basically, you need to be a Game Pass Core member now to access those Xbox One games you redeemed with Gold. It’s a real change from how it used to be. I ran into the same issue trying to play some old games I got, and it was a letdown to find I couldn’t play them without the subscription.
Exactly! If it’s an Xbox One game acquired via Games with Gold, you need to have an active Game Pass membership to play. The cool part is Xbox 360 games are forever yours, but anything from the Xbox One era with Gold needs that ongoing subscription. It’s frustrating, I feel you.
Unfortunately, if you got that game through Games with Gold, you need to have an active Game Pass subscription to play Xbox One games. Even if they were free back in the day, they have that requirement now. It’s a bummer, especially for single-player games that used to just be yours forever.
Yeah, it’s a real change in policy. Games With Gold on Xbox 360 allowed you to keep games no matter what, but now with Xbox One games, it’s different. If you weren’t subscribed to Game Pass ever since they made that transition, the games you got through Gold are locked behind that subscription now. Tough break, I know.
But that seems confusing since it was picked up via Games with Gold years ago. It shouldn’t be tied to a subscription, right?
