I recently built a new gaming PC and I’m stuck trying to figure out why I’m getting about 50 frames per second less than I should in every game. I’ve updated everything I could think of and scoured the internet for solutions, but I’m at a loss. I’m using Windows 11 Home, and here are my specs:
– CPU: Intel Core i7-14700K
– GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4070
– Motherboard: MSI PRO Z790-VC WIFI
– RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 6000MHz CL36
– Cooler: MSI MAG CoreLiquid 240R V2 AIO (top-mounted)
– Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow (mid-tower ATX)
– PSU: Corsair 850W
I’m gaming on a 1440p monitor with a 144Hz refresh rate. For example, in Warzone, I’m getting around 60-80 FPS, and in DayZ, I’m hitting about 80-100 FPS. My CPU usage is around 40%, while the GPU is typically in the 70% range during gameplay. Any ideas on what might be going wrong?

Have you checked if XMP is enabled for your RAM? Sometimes, if it’s not set up correctly, it can bottleneck performance. Also, keep an eye on thermal throttling. If your temperatures are too high, especially for the CPU, it can affect your frame rates.
Honestly, don’t rely too much on Windows Task Manager for accurate GPU data anymore. It can be misleading. Your FPS range sounds roughly normal for a base RTX 4070—it’s not going to hit 90+ like a higher-end card.
I’ve seen some sources mentioning higher FPS expectations, though, so I wasn’t sure what to think.
Yeah, considering you have a 4070, those numbers seem pretty in line, especially compared to a 4090 or the newer models.
I have to ask, have you checked for any bizarre background processes? You might unknowingly have a crypto miner running that could be hogging resources.
XMP is enabled, and the hottest core hits 82°C with most staying in the 60s while under load.
