I’ve just started playing Minecraft Java for the first time with my friend who created a server. A strange thing is happening; I’m seeing a character that my friend can’t see, and they claim they don’t know them. Is this something normal or might there be something else going on?

It’s possible that the interloper is someone your friend knows and they might be pranking you. Adding a whitelist that includes only you and your friend might help. In this way, only people listed can join the server, ensuring no surprising visits!
There’s a possibility that this might be a glitch or some kind of technical hiccup, especially if the server isn’t set up right. I’d suggest having your friend take a screenshot of the server tab list while this person is online, just to see if anything looks out of place.
If your friend set up the server via a free hosting service, then it’s quite possible that random users are joining. A simple way to fix this is by enabling a whitelist and only adding the usernames of yourself and your friend. This should prevent any unwanted guests from joining.
