Which RPGs Use Wound Mechanics Instead of Traditional Hit Points?

I’m on the hunt for tabletop RPGs that focus on “wound mechanics” instead of the usual hit points found in many D20 systems. I’m looking for games that are simple and not overly complex. If you have any recommendations or insights, I would really appreciate your help!

For something a bit different, check out Blades in the Dark. I love its wound system, especially with the new Deep Cuts expansion. It’s got a well-designed harm system that manages the severity of injuries without being overly complicated. Plus, it encourages character development!

You might want to consider Fate or GURPS. They both have unique ways of handling damage. Fate uses ‘consequences’ for stress overflow which adds some interesting depth, whereas GURPS, although it includes hit points, also allows for limb damage without being too crunchy.

If you’re looking for something not too crunchy, how about the D6 System? It handles damage based on a character’s soak level, and it provides a range of outcomes like stunned or mortally wounded based on how badly they get hit. It’s refreshing and keeps things sleek.

Savage Worlds is a great option! It’s pretty low to medium crunch, and it uses a clear wound system. As characters get tougher over time, it just makes them more resistant to taking wounds, but the actual number of wounds they can endure doesn’t change. Each wound does make your actions harder, which keeps things interesting!

Another neat game to look at is Mothership, which utilizes a wound table that varies depending on the weapon used. It’s definitely a cool spin on traditional damage mechanics and adds some variety to gameplay!
